Metal Cross

6th Century AD – Bronze – 53.5x36x24cm

This processional cross was found in the Church of Bishop Milachios in the archaeological site of Machaerus. It is believed to have been used by monks during a religious ritual, where they ascended Mount Machaerus in Madaba in a celebratory ceremony honoring the memory of John the Baptist.
